Plain Makhana (also known as Phool Makhana or Fox Nuts) consists of the popped, edible seeds harvested from the prickly water lily (Euryale ferox), primarily grown in the wetlands of Bihar and Nepal.
Nutritional Profile: Makhana is a low-calorie superfood (approx. 350 kcal per 100g) that is gluten-free, vegan, and low in fat. It is exceptionally rich in plant-based protein, dietary fiber, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and antioxidants (specifically kaempferol, which has anti-aging properties).
Health Benefits: Known for supporting heart health (low sodium, high magnesium), aiding in weight management (high satiety, low calorie), regulating blood sugar (low glycemic index), and promoting kidney health (astringent properties). It is a traditional fasting food (Vrat ka khana) in India.
